  • The New York State film production market is one of the largest in the United States as well as world-wide and has a world-class film office located in New York City equipped and eager to service the needs of the production community while furthering economic development in the State of New York.

Being located in New Jersey, very close to New York City and the lower Hudson Valley of New York, I call on the NYS Film Office (as well as the NYC Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcast (MOFTB) - the film liaison for New York City) frequently for assistance with location and production needs for film, video, photo and events productions; the NYS Film Office (as well as MOFTB) are always helpful and knowledgeable helping me solve any location or other production-related challenges as New York (state and / or city ;-) might avail themselves.

    Networking

If you are a location professional, there are a number of ways to interact with peers and other production people online.

Below are some free resources I know of (and have initiated, in some cases) and probably belong to myself; if anyone knows of others I would be interested to find out about them:

  • locationtalk
  • zimbio- location scouting (I started this group)
  • ma.gnolia/locationscout (I started this group)
  • locationscout linkit
  • WheresSpot- Prisoners of Advertising - Forum - paid subscription portal which includes a discussion group
  • Google Groups

  • alt.tv.commercials
  • rec.arts.movies.production
  • rec.video.production
  • flickr/locationscouting
  • There may be regional groups appropriate to your locale; here in the New York City area , the yahoo group known as lifilm is popular.

There are also many professional organizations with close ties to production, such as AICP and APA to name but a very few.

In addition to its website presence, WhereSpot used to be a free Yahoo Group discussion list*, with somewhere in the neighborhood of 8,000 members at one time. Sometime around May 2007, Wheresspot moved its discussions off Yahoo Groups on-site to its self-hosted website, having added many other features to the self-hosted site such as a member map, resource directories, classifieds and blog and became a paid-subscription portal. In a number of posts on the old list, as well as continuing on the new list, the moderators explained (in as many words) that in order to move the discussion list and add the other features to a self-hosted site as well as create self-motivation to continue putting the effort into maintaining an active community as diverse as WhereSpot, they needed to change to a paid-subscription model. At one point I remember reading that they felt the community had actually grown a little too big and the content of discussions had become all too redundant at times - I can personally remember receiving somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 posts (or more) over the period of a day and feeling annoyed at a lot of what was asked and discussed as the content often involved subject matter that had been visited multiple times before or seeming like people were simply too lazy to use a search engine (i.e Google or Yahoo) to find the answers to their questions; the moderators further defended the changes (in as many words) saying the community was smaller, yet comprised *only* of serious professionals, which I take to mean the people willing to pony up the subscription fee were really serious about wanting to be there.

WheresSpot is relevant for location professionals (i.e. location scouts, location managers) as the diverse scope WheresSpot’s community and discussions covers pre-production and locations with a focus on tv commercials and productions as might be used in other areas of advertising such as print ads, trade videos, marketing events and other types of media production.

    Sample Location Contracts

Attached are two (2) boilerplates of the location contracts we use so there is a written agreement between us, production and property owners when a deal has been negotiated to use a property as a filming location for a film, photo or video shoot.

    (1) is a long form - the one that has been around here some time now, but often seems intimidating and “overkill” for “everyday” use…
    (2) is a shorter form, less detailed but seems to-the-point for most everyday use.

Caveat: R. Richard Hobbs is NOT an attorney and makes no warranty of legal validity of either document presented here. These documents are presented for illustrative purposes only, do not neccesarily constitute legally binding agreement(s) and certainly do not represent agreements of any sort between R. In Defence of “Normal” Working Hours

Couple of interesting treatises from Digital Content Producer on the subject of long workdays typical in the production industry:

  • Digital Content Producer | Eight Hours for Hollywood | Sep 1, 1998 12:00 PM | Marsha Scarbrough

“After veteran line producer Robert Schneider budgeted a $40 million below-the-line studio feature film based on the usual 12-hour shooting day, he decided to try an experiment. He re-budgeted the same film based on an eight-hour day. He was challenging the long-held assumption that movie crews must work a 12-hour minimum day to counter the high daily costs of stage, location, and equipment rentals.

He extended the 17-week shooting schedule to 20 weeks and refigured the budget based on an eight-hour camera day with one-hour prep time and one-hour wrap time.

The new budget came in one million dollars cheaper.”

  • Extreme Hours - Film Professionals on Hollywood’s Dark Side | Nov 1, 2006 12:02 AM | By Marsha Scarbrough

“Most film production professionals have stories about working extreme hours. I personally tell tales of a rainy all-nighter in Texas where the crew went into 13 meal penalties. That night, the gaffer ordered two electricians to link arms with me to hold me up because I was falling asleep on my feet between calling out “Rolling” and “Cut.” To this day, I bless Reggie Boatright for saving me the embarrassment of falling face-first into a sea of mud while Burt Reynolds was emoting. Fortunately, I was on a distant location, so a Teamster-driven van took me back to the hotel in the morning. I was lucky I didn’t have to face the danger of driving home.”

    Location Scouting and Management Handbook

A while back I reviewed Amazon.com | Location Scouting and Management Handbook | Television, Film and Still Photography| Robert Maier | Books

    Location Scouting and Management Handbook

Robert Maier. Focal Press 1994, Paperback, 175 pages, $40.95

    4.0

    Amazon Editorial Review:

“Discover what makes an excellent location, how to manage the location and how to handle any problems that might come up.”

    My Review:

“I also bought this book back in the ’90’s and lent it to an associate who never returned it!

The person I loaned it to knew very little of location scouting and location management and since I never got the book back I can only assume they found it very useful…

Perhaps this novice level of reader was the target audience; the book does give some of the basic ‘mechanics’ and duties expected of a location professional but does not go into the many intracies of diplomacy and, as an example, being able to purvey to a lay property owner in a succinct way what you are doing, what production will be doing, what is expected of them and what is in it for them.”

…I went on to say (among other things) that I thought the book needed an update, the book was grounded in ’80’s - ’90’s vintage technology and I didn’t think the book accurately addressed current challenges and practices of a digital-age location scout.

Location Scouting and Management Handbook is currently out of print. The copy I bought was a paperback edition (as is currently listed on Amazon…) when I bought it new it was maybe $20 - $25:

    6 used & new from $75.00

I probably would have more careful loaning my copy out had I known it would be a collectors edition! LOL ;-)

Ziki + Other Social Networking Websites

ziki.com is one of them newfangled mashup social software web 2.0 thingamajiggers ;-)

Honestly, most any social software site has got to be a good thing, there are just so many -

Here are a few things I have learned trying out a number of social software sites:

    1. Make sure the site itself that functions correctly and is likely to stay online for the foreseeable future especially if there is potential for you to spend a lot of time configuring your profile / settings and maintaining / contributing to the community - many new sites appearing on the internet on a constant basis are beta works-progress, may have been simply built to flip… there are just a lot of things to take into consideration about investing a lot of time (or possibly even money) in a website over which you have no control regarding its actual existence.
    2. Be careful you don’t duplicate your own content or draw attention away from your own site (if that matters to you) adding your feed(s) or other content from your own site to the social site…not to open an seo can of worms here…

I find Ziki interesting because it allows both a business profile and a personal profile - I had both, but ended up preferring only to have a business profile and what was nice was to be able to delete the personal profile pretty easily.

In November / December 2007, I travelled to the Lake Mead, NV area to meet with, along with the rest of Team Q-spheres USA, Jo VanHove and Frans VanDenBemd for an opportunity to familiarize ourselves with and use the Q-spheres digital capture system. During the course of the trip, not only did the American contingent of Team Q-spheres come away with a thorough training in Q-spheres technology and practices, the results of the actual Q-spheres sessions have provided us all with the valuable assets of beautiful lightspheres and backgrounds of the Nevada desert.
