Location Scouting the Brooklyn Bridge

*I just uploaded a bunch of digital panoramic photos of the Brooklyn Bridge to Flickr from a recent location scouting job I did for a Helmut Lotti / Crooners music video shoot that was filmed around New York, NY in June, 2006. Here is one of the set.

Hi Cuccina! How to get your home in the movies:

    • Secure Production Permission - Make sure that production is allowed in your neighborhood. If it is:
    • Contact your state or local film commission. They’ll help you get your home on the market for shoots. Or
    • Get in touch with a location agent.”

This bookmarklet worked great for me, you save it to your Bookmarks (Firefox) or Favorites (Internet Explorer), log in to your Flickr page and a photo you would like to geotag. Click the bookmark and let the magic begin!

The bookmarklet adds the code to your Flickr page to create a url at Google Maps and a link on your Flickr page to the map.

Here is a photo set I tagged using the bookmarklet. Very kewl!

Helpful for a location scout using Flickr to assemble an album of location photos and there is a need to indicate the geographic location of the photos.

    The Acme

    About The Acme

How The ACME Resource Network came to be

“Necessity is the mother of invention and her name is Libby Woolems. A successful art director who just had to have her way, or at least a better way, to research, create, locate and build the myriad of designs for her commercial and entertainment clients…

…The idea for The ACME began as a vision, or more like a mirage, that floated before Libby while she sat in her sweltering car thumbing through two milk crates of Yellow Pages and well known entertainment resource directories. On this particular Saturday morning she had one hour to locate a prop that was needed for the first set up and shot of the day. Libby thought to herself, “If only these businesses would simply list their hours.” And so it began in 1997.”

    The Acme Resource Network
is a diverse directory of production resources of particularly likely interest to set designers, set builders, film / photo stylists and other art department personnel as well as other production entities such as media production companies in general, line producers and production coordinators, assistant directors and location managers / scouts - particularly those people and companies located in such production-hub areas such as Hollywood (CA), Los Angeles (CA), New York (NY), North Hollywood (CA), San Francisco (CA) and West Hollywood (CA). (these are the “featured cities” from The Acme’s home page)

I like the name har har :-) - remember in all those Chuck Jones / Road Runner cartoons all of Wile E. Coyote’s “weapons of mass destruction” ;-) and other props were always “Acme” brand?

p.s. All Chuck Jones’ stuff came straight outta Burbank (Warner Brothers is there) just like The Acme! ;-)

    Location Scouting and Management Handbook

A while back I reviewed Amazon.com | Location Scouting and Management Handbook | Television, Film and Still Photography| Robert Maier | Books

    Location Scouting and Management Handbook

Robert Maier. Focal Press 1994, Paperback, 175 pages, $40.95

    4.0

    Amazon Editorial Review:

“Discover what makes an excellent location, how to manage the location and how to handle any problems that might come up.”

    My Review:

“I also bought this book back in the ’90’s and lent it to an associate who never returned it!

The person I loaned it to knew very little of location scouting and location management and since I never got the book back I can only assume they found it very useful…

Perhaps this novice level of reader was the target audience; the book does give some of the basic ‘mechanics’ and duties expected of a location professional but does not go into the many intracies of diplomacy and, as an example, being able to purvey to a lay property owner in a succinct way what you are doing, what production will be doing, what is expected of them and what is in it for them.”

…I went on to say (among other things) that I thought the book needed an update, the book was grounded in ’80’s - ’90’s vintage technology and I didn’t think the book accurately addressed current challenges and practices of a digital-age location scout.

Location Scouting and Management Handbook is currently out of print. The copy I bought was a paperback edition (as is currently listed on Amazon…) when I bought it new it was maybe $20 - $25:

    6 used & new from $75.00

I probably would have more careful loaning my copy out had I known it would be a collectors edition! LOL ;-)

    Urban Dictionary: Fauxtograph

    fauxtograph

“A fauxtograph is a practical joke in which the video setting of a digital camera is used to trick the target into posing for a really long time for what isn’t a picture at all.”

read the rest… warning: Urban Dictionary content can be, well, pretty “urban” at times.

    Location Scouting Tips

There is a valuable informational article on VideoMaker entitled 11 Tips for Location Scouting which includes some basic flight-checks relevant to location scouting.

By virtue of being included in an article on a site called VideoMaker, the tips would seem to be suggested specifically for those in the video production profession, however, I feel the points raised are also general enough to cover many issues and challenges typically encountered location scouting for film and photography projects as well.

Here are the titles of the tips:

    1. Know your script
    2. Scout at the right time
    3. Look at light
    4. Follow the sun
    5. Check for power supplies
    6. Listen (not quite as important for stills - RH)
    7. Examine the elements
    8. Decide where to set up
    9. Get permission
    10. Evaluate the area
    11. And finally, take notes!

Merely listing the tips doesn’t do the VideoMaker article justice, much more valuable additional information is available if you read the actual article.

A while back I included a link in a post on locationscout.us to another good article on VideoMaker entitled Video Pre-Production FAQ. Admittedly, there are lots of production links in that particular article on locationscout.us; the quickest way to find the link (if you don’t want to simply follow the link above? - duh ;-) …or maybe some other production-related link you might have in mind (?) is to do a term search using your browser (Windows: CTRL-F in both IE and Firefox).

I will be adding a link to this article (which obviously includes links to the two VideoMaker articles) on my FAQS Page.

In November / December 2007, I travelled to the Lake Mead, NV area to meet with, along with the rest of Team Q-spheres USA, Jo VanHove and Frans VanDenBemd for an opportunity to familiarize ourselves with and use the Q-spheres digital capture system. During the course of the trip, not only did the American contingent of Team Q-spheres come away with a thorough training in Q-spheres technology and practices, the results of the actual Q-spheres sessions have provided us all with the valuable assets of beautiful lightspheres and backgrounds of the Nevada desert.

    PhotoServe

One of the monthly email newsletters I receive is PDN’s Photoserve Newsletter (subscribe)

Lately Photoserve has been publishing two columns I find interesting and informative:

  • Portfolios of The Month
  • Editors Choice
  • (You can find both of the above columns on the Photoserve home page)

Of course, in addition to the portfolio features, PhotoServe, being a product of Photo District News (PDN), which is more or less the industry standard of trade publications for commercial photography, always has other news and information of interest to me as a photo producer and location scout.

Since PDN and PhotoServe are both published out of New York City, even tho the editorial “beat” is world-wide, I often find the content even more relevant to my own personal demographic.

Photo District News produces the annual Photo Plus Expo each fall, which traditionally takes place in New York City at Javits Center serving as a major photo-industry event and includes, along with Photo District News’ own annual awards party and co-sponsored industry party, many other independently-planned parties and events scheduled to take advantage of the many different photographers, vendors and other photo-industry associates normally in town during the Photo Plus Expo.

    Wikipedia-n-Me

I recently authored my second article for Wikipedia, a short definition / description of the term “location library”:

Location Library (Motion Pictures and Still Photography)

…the title is nearly as long as the article! ;-) Believe it or not, even tho the terms “location archive” or actually, more frequently, “location library” are terms I (and maybe you, too, if you are reading this - it’s not like I ever purported my blog to even attempt to appeal to anyone beyond a very specific niche of folks who work in various capacities in the film, photo and tv production communities… so unless you fit that profile the only way I can imagine you ended up here is you are really lost or really bored ;-) )

    …but I digress…

I started a considerably lengthier article on the subject of location scouting several years ago:

    Location Scouting

..which I have continued to contribute to regularly as the article has matured - thanks of course to the generous contributions other Wikipedians

Both articles are part of my efforts as a member of Film-Reel-Wikipedia Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Filmmaking task force

Also, altho the Wikipedia no-follow links policy is in place for very good reasons (i.e. link spam) and therefore, since Wikipedia doesnt generate any “link love“, I am tooting my horn here!
