Location Scouting the Brooklyn Bridge

Who to contact to rent your home to production companies for movies or commericals

Answer | Subject: Re: rental property for movies and tv commericals | Answered By: bobbie7-ga on 29 Jan 2004 21:13 PST

Hi Cuccina! How to get your home in the movies:

    • Secure Production Permission - Make sure that production is allowed in your neighborhood. If it is:
    • Contact your state or local film commission. They’ll help you get your home on the market for shoots. Or
    • Get in touch with a location agent.”

Localize Bookmarklet - Map Your Flickr Photos! | Overview

“I just spent some time to create a slim bookmarklet that enables mapping, geocoding and geotagging directly in your Flickr photo page. It works with all common browsers without the need for any extension.”

This bookmarklet worked great for me, you save it to your Bookmarks (Firefox) or Favorites (Internet Explorer), log in to your Flickr page and a photo you would like to geotag. Click the bookmark and let the magic begin!

The bookmarklet adds the code to your Flickr page to create a url at Google Maps and a link on your Flickr page to the map.

Here is a photo set I tagged using the bookmarklet. Very kewl!

Helpful for a location scout using Flickr to assemble an album of location photos and there is a need to indicate the geographic location of the photos.

Sumaato also created loc.alize.us, a Google Maps mashup.

Above is a loc.alize.us page for me.

    Brooklyn - Queens Expressway (BQE)

The nyc.locationscout.us header photograph (also shown below) depicts part of the elevated roadway section of the Brooklyn - Queens Expressway (BQE or I-278) from ground level along northern Hamilton Avenue in Brooklyn that follows underneath the route of the BQE for a distance as they both snake thru Brooklyn, NY.

As its name suggests, the BQE is an expressway that connects the New York City boroughs (or “boros”) of Brooklyn and Queens.

On a recent location scouting assignment that included the adventure of driving multiple times all over many sections of Brooklyn and Queens, while passing by the area shown (as well as other sections of the BQE viewable from underneath), I was somehow taken the by the graphic juxtaposition of the graceful curve(s) of the road the BQE creates as it meanders along overhead and enormity of the trusses against the general grittiness and otherwise nondescript “ordinariness” of the many industrial areas underneath the BQE.* For me, the drizzly, gray, overcast day adds to the moodiness and melancholy - but I would love to have an opportunity to go back on a clear day, maybe a very late afternoon or early morning - maybe there are long streaks of sunlight that come streaming thru the trusses and create patterns of light and shadow on the environment below?

*The necessary cropping of the header photo from the original does little highlight these features - I believe the original composition illustrates it much better, so the original is included below:

    cropped-l1010677sm

BQE from Hamilton Ave in Brooklyn, NY

Click either image for a better view

The BQE roadway up top is what you would expect on a major thoroughfare thru a very large city - multiple lanes and possible potholes, not as rough as that icon of bad road, BQE’s evil sister, the Cross Bronx Expressway - at various times traffic (usually) moving at a brisk pace, during which there will be the usual hot-doggers and tail-gaters, other times slowed to a crawl such as in the thick of weekday rush hours, accidents, construction or “police activity”. …lots of photos taken along the BQE

From a location scout’s or a filmmaker’s point of view, my synopsis of the BQE would be, “urban, gritty, iconic New York City outer boros or ‘Manhattan-from-a-distance’ (some very impressive skyline views of Manhattan can be experienced while travelling on the elevated sections of the BQE…)”; you see more rooftops of 3-4 story buildings typical of many residential areas of New York City (which, if you didn’t know, includes the 5 boros of Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island…) than you can shake a stick at - ..”tar beaches“, boiler / furnace vents, all manner of rickety - looking tv antennae of every size cocked at every angle, satellite dishes, power and telephone wires, items tossed onto the roofs and forgotten about: shoes, soft drink cans / bottles, items of clothing, balls, etc… all of course covered with layers of soot and grime from oil furnaces and the daily exhaust of thousands of automobiles and trucks passing by…

From a production logistics point of view, other than low or non-impact vehicle-to-vehicle “running shots” or vehicle-to-environment (typically establishing shots or b-roll), actually filming on the BQE would seem to be a proposition that, while not necessarily impossible would likely be met initially with some hesitance by the many entities likely to be required to cooperate and assist, all the way from U.S. Department of Transportation (the BQE (I-278) is a spur of interstate highway I-78 and therefore under federal jurisdiction…) to likely the New York State Department of Transportation, New York City Department of Transportation, New York State Police, definitely the New York State Film Office, New York City Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcast (MOFTB) and probably New York City Police Department Special Operations / TV / Movie Unit (if for no other reason than to possibly coordinate local traffic on city streets with regard to exits / on-ramps to / from the BQE on-ramp / exit ramps to / from local city streets). …and this is probably not a complete list…

If allowed at all, filming would likely be required to occur on a day or night of lowest anticipated vehicle traffic and impact on day-to-day normal activity, i.e. perhaps a very early Sunday morning or “apres” hours late evening and filming would likely need to be coordinated to allow one or more lanes of traffic to be either open at all times or quickly opened as needed so as to allow traffic to pass thru or around the set periodically - no filmmaker, photographer, producer or location manager should ever dream they are going to completely “own” a stretch of high volume interstate / inner city expressway for any extended length of time.

Suggestion: allow plenty of lead time for preproduction - expect lots of film permits and paperwork, hire the best location manager and location scouts you can find, be prepared to make lots of concessions in the interest of the welfare of the general public… and - oh, yeah… - bring a checkbook ;-)

At least one feature film is mentioned prominently as featuring the BQE - 1990’s Quick Change:

…via Wikipedia: Brooklyn - Queens Expressway

“Motorists may encounter difficulity finding an entrance onto the BQE from Brooklyn side streets, as illustrated in the 1990 movie, Quick Change, starring Bill Murray. Murray and his cohorts escape from their Manhattan bank robbery in their getaway car, only to take the wrong turn from the BQE — they are unable to get back on. Murray finds a sign reading “To I-278,” but the arrow at the bottom of the sign rotates around, and around. The Brooklyn Queens Expressway is infamous for rush hour traffic congestion.”

    Location Scouting in Hoboken, NJ

Recently, I was hired to location scout in Hoboken, NJ for an upcoming UK tv program and it was an opportunity for me to explore an interesting city I have lived within 20 minutes or so of for about 15 years but never really spent much time in, other than to pass thru on the NJ Transit train to get to the PATH train, (which runs under the Hudson River) to travel into New York City.

Besides being chock full of local NYC area history and home and birthplace to many interesting people (including Frank Sinatra), Hoboken has somewhat recently morphed from a gritty harbor town into an elegant urban enclave- but with enough of the gritty edges left over to maintain a contrast of lifestyles and visual texture.

A few interesting facts about Hoboken (with a little help and thanks to The Hoboken Museum, Wikipedia, IMDB and other resources):

The name Hoboken is derived from the Dutch word, “Hoebuck,” meaning “high bluff.”

Hoboken is known as the “Mile Square Town”; if you look at a map of the town you will see that it is laid out pretty much in a neat square shape. BTW, here’s another map of Hoboken.

Hoboken’s institute of higher learning, Stevens Institute of Technology, is named after patriot Colonel John Stevens, Colonial Treasurer of New Jersey and later innovative inventor. The college is located on the bluff which rises sharply up from the Hudson River’s edge, and is one of the many bluffs in the area from which the town name was derived.

The Academy Award-winning movie, “On The Waterfront“, starring Marlon Brando and directed by Elia Kazan and which premiered in 1954, was filmed in Hoboken.

American baseball was “born” in Hoboken! this from the Hoboken Baseball website:

“On 19 June 1846, the first officially recorded, organized baseball match was played under Alexander Joy Cartwright’s rules on Hoboken’s Elysian Fields with the New York Base Ball Club defeating the Knickerbockers 23-1. Cartwright umpired.”

    del.icio.us :: TagMasher

…yet another adventure in deploying lightweight do-it-yourself (DIY) tech solutions inna location scoutin’ bidness.

The title says it all. I was looking for a way to aggregate (collect) bookmarks (…favorites…posts) on del.icio.us that are most relevant to location scouting.

Conventional wisdom would seem to dictate that a search of tags such as “location scout” would be in order.

  • There are several del.icio.us-specific peculiarities that make this a more complicated task than it might seem on the surface: Because of the way del.icio.us handles tags, multiple word phrases (i.e. location scout) must be joined together so there are no spaces between the words, otherwise “location” and “scout” become two different tags. Obviously there are a number of ways to accomplish this; I decided that:
    1. locationscout
    2. location+scout
    3. location-scout” and
    4. location_scout
    5. …were likely to be the most popular syntaxes.

  • Also the mashup I found to aggregate the bookmarks has a 4-tag limit (more about this shortly), so, given the parameters, the syntaxes above dovetailed into the plan pretty smoothly.

Tag searching using the del.icio.us website interface is limited to just one tag. I needed to find a way to search del.icio.us using multiple tags at once.

Enter Yahoo Pipes. Pipes is a recent “whatsit?” (to me, anyway ;-) …all I know is it will “do stuff” using various web2.0 features such as accessing and interfacing with various API’s, databases and such and that there has been a good deal of chatter in the tech circles lately about Pipes. It does look a little like Ning, but I haven’t had a chance to play with Pipes at all other than this little side-project. (BTW some people think I am a bit of a techy, but it’s not true; real techies are always able to see that I am just someone who knows enough to be annoying and dangerous- just ask my web host ;-)

In a nutshell, “someone” (one Derek Van Vliet, actually…) figured out how search del.icio.us using 4 tags simultaneously as well as aggregating the results. The results are effective because they consist of posts that only had to use at least *one* of the tags as opposed to a heavily filtered list including only posts having to use all the tags, the former seeming to be the default of many database searches. Yet, still, the Pipe seemed to handle filtering out “noise” results such as “boy scout” or “store location”, etc. very well. :-)

  • del.icio.us Tag Masher - 4 Tags Pipe
  • …which I renamed slightly to reflect the manner in which I am using the pipe, which is ok because all this kind of stuff in this neck of cyberspace is pretty open-source and in fact experimentation is generally encouraged.

Once I ran the Pipe and had my results (a web page exportable as an rss xml feed, of course :-) like any good web2.0 app should…)

I took the feed link and made a Feedburner feed. I like Feedburner because there are so many additional features available that can be used on raw rss feeds. If you have worked with Feedburner much at all, you’ll know what I am talking about.

  • del.icio.us :: TagMasher :: locationscout :: location+scout :: location-scout :: location_scout Feedburner Feed
  • While I was setting up the Feedburner feed, I set up a SpringWidget, which is the box below and which is used to display the feed here on this website.

What? of course, these are all free web services. (Altho, not provided by me)

Update I also used the tags “locationscouting“, “location+scouting“, “location-scouting” and “location_scouting” on del.icio.us Tag Masher - 4 Tags Pipe.

  • del.icio.us Tag Masher - 4 Tags with tags locationscouting, location+scouting, location-scouting, location_scouting (Derek van Vliet’s original)
  • del.icio.us Tag Masher - 4 Tags with tags locationscouting, location+scouting, location-scouting, location_scouting (my clone)

  • Feedburner Feed made from Derek’s Pipe w/ tags applied:

    Yahoo Feed of my clone:

feed del.icio.us Tag Masher - 4 Tags - location scout

Cloned del.icio.us Tag Masher - 4 Tags with tags locationscouting, location+scouting, location-scouting, location_scouting Grazr Widget

    Grazr
  • Update 3/21/08 | I cloned it! I felt a lot less intimidated by THE PIPE ;-) this time out so I just went in there with a hammer and a wrench ;-) … removed (from this post) …SpringWidget, added (to this post) …original Pipe note(s), my clone / feed URL, added map | original timestamp: April 07, 2007 @ 14:29

    Location Scout Linkit

    short version:

    location scout linkit (locationscout.ning.com):

New York City and Northeast US Film Offices

misc location scouting and film production resources

    long(er) version:

I “started an app” (well, actually I “cloned” Amy’s Robot: Linkit) on ning.com, which is a Web 2.0 /php/html/ajax (with rails in the wings) mashup (which probably means nothing to you)…

But I digress: whats very kewl about ning.com is you get to mashup their mashups! …and you dont have to be a programmer to achieve some considerable productivity in the process~ even kewler is, if you *do* know anything about writing code, the source for all their applications (”apps”) is available right on the site in true open-source fashion. More info here (if you’re the technically inclined type).

It took me about an hour to create locationscout linkit, it’s just links to most of the film offices and some of the production resources I call on fairly regularly, but since locationscout linkit is based on social bookmarking, folksonomy and tags (in the old days I think it was called “collaboration” ;-) I hope others will contribute their own bits of location scouting information so we can all become more productive.

Great Places Directory - Rudolph House

Great Places Directory | New York | Paul Rudolph House

There are several resources I use regularly especially for researching event venue locations, such as BizBash and Locations Magazine but I was not familiar with the Great Places Directory till I stumbled onto a link to it on the New York City MOFTB website this morning.

I already found one location I was not previously familiar with, the Paul Rudolph House in midtown Manhattan on East 58th St. Paul Rudolph was an architect of some merit famous for a modern, minimalist style of architecture. The house on 58th St appears to currently operate as a showroom for Modulightor designer lighting and home to Paul Rudolph Foundation (PRF). PRF website states that the house is available as an event venue and although I havent checked, presumably (or at least hopefully ;-) , the house is available as a possible film or photo location as well.

  • Slightly off-topic, but interesting (to me ;-) …according to Wikipedia

“Rudolph earned his master’s degree in architecture at Auburn University (then known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute) in 1940…”

  • I spent some time as a teenager and adult in and around Auburn, AL and my parents lived there twice over the course of many years. My Mom worked at Auburn University for many years.

    Location Scouting Tips

There is a valuable informational article on VideoMaker entitled 11 Tips for Location Scouting which includes some basic flight-checks relevant to location scouting.

By virtue of being included in an article on a site called VideoMaker, the tips would seem to be suggested specifically for those in the video production profession, however, I feel the points raised are also general enough to cover many issues and challenges typically encountered location scouting for film and photography projects as well.

Here are the titles of the tips:

    1. Know your script
    2. Scout at the right time
    3. Look at light
    4. Follow the sun
    5. Check for power supplies
    6. Listen (not quite as important for stills - RH)
    7. Examine the elements
    8. Decide where to set up
    9. Get permission
    10. Evaluate the area
    11. And finally, take notes!

Merely listing the tips doesn’t do the VideoMaker article justice, much more valuable additional information is available if you read the actual article.

A while back I included a link in a post on locationscout.us to another good article on VideoMaker entitled Video Pre-Production FAQ. Admittedly, there are lots of production links in that particular article on locationscout.us; the quickest way to find the link (if you don’t want to simply follow the link above? - duh ;-) …or maybe some other production-related link you might have in mind (?) is to do a term search using your browser (Windows: CTRL-F in both IE and Firefox).

I will be adding a link to this article (which obviously includes links to the two VideoMaker articles) on my FAQS Page.
