A simulacrum of nothing much

A simulacrum of nothing much

“One of the many horrors of L.A. architecture is certainly its over-presentation in movies and television. It is comically clichéd to see stories set in other cities, whose framing shots are the same Los Angeles “skyline” that even non-Angelenos have come to recognize as framing shots of every non-L.A. city that makes it onto filmic representation.”

    AARP Location Scout

AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) The Magazine’s Location Scout is not really about location scouting for film / television or photo but rather, finding a suitable place to live, based on a number of of different criteria. So this is yet ANOTHER kind of location scouting ;)

That said, AARP Magazine’s Location Scout could still be used in some measure by a location scout or producer to help pinpoint some aspects of a geographic location that might lend that themselves toward determining the most suitable place to use as a location for a given production.

In any case and if nothing else, the AARP Magazine’s Location Scout is a fun read and presents some food for thought regarding one’s own lifestyle preferences.

    For instance, if you…

  • go to the AARP Magazine Location Scout front page and use the “Start Now” link, you are transported to a page with the heading “Climate / Locale” and presented with a number of options to chose from based on Climate preferences.
  • Next you are asked which Area of the United States you would prefer to live in.
  • Next you are asked three questions regarding Housing: (affordability), (price appreciation), (availability of senior housing options - it IS the AARP, after all), (property tax rates), (utility costs) and (housing starts)
  • Work preferences - (low unemployment), (high job growth), (overall income tax rates), (sales tax rates), (cost of living) and (taxes on pensions)
  • Arts, Culture & Lifestyle - availability of… (museums and galleries), (dining options), (performing arts), (libraries), (internet access)
  • Recreation - (presence of professional sports teams), (boating, surfing, sailing), (river or inland lake), (outdoors / national parks), (golf courses)
  • Transportation - (commuting), (mass transit), (airport(s)
  • Health - (affordability of medical and dental care), (quantity of physicians), (air quality), availability of… (nursing homes), (home care options), (meals on wheels), (geriatric medical specialists), (on-demand medical transportation)
  • Education - (level of spending per student), (high graduation rates), (cultural and intellectual opportunities), (range of school options)
  • Then you get your results!

    Building Burning Man

Current | Burning Man | Burning Man Art Build 2008 | via boingboing

“Every year thousands of people descend onto Black Rock to build a city in the desert from scratch. And for many of the artists and engineers, the period of set-up before the gates actually open has become the most important part of this yearly event. We talk to the founder of Burning Man, Larry Harvey, as well as the masterminds behind the art installations Temple, Elevation, Babylon, Mutopia, and of course, the team behind the building of The Man, as they share their views and show us the art that embodies this year’s theme: The American Dream.”

    Animal House Movie Lives On

The Register-Guard (Eugene, OR) | ‘Animal House’ revisited | The 1978 comedy lives on with an inside look during a two-hour documentary tonight | By Mark Baker | Published: August 13, 2008 12:00AM

“…Thirty years after the release of the classic National Lampoon comedy filmed in Eugene and Cottage Grove, it’s still local legend and most likely always will be.”

“…Produced for less than $3 million, “Animal House” turned out to be one of the most profitable movies ever made, bringing in $141.6 million at the box office. The U.S. Library of Congress even deemed it a “culturally significant” film in 2001, selecting it for preservation in the National Film Registry. It also made Bravo’s list of the “100 Funniest Movies” ever made, and was No. 36 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 best American comedies.”

Culture, Cupcakes and Cocktails at the Chelsea Art Museum 3 Jun 2009, 1:36 am

Social networking site Yelp.com, together with the Chelsea Cultural Partnership threw a fabulous launch party at the Chelsea Art museum to kick off the Passport to Chelsea campaign.

The “Passport to Chelsea”  offered guests discounts and special offers to sample the culinary, artistic and athletic specialties all found in the neighborhood.

The three-level museum housed several art and design exhibits that I enjoyed.  One was “Sustainability” presented by a collective of Italian design brands. It showcased furniture, art, living and functional pieces made from sustainable materials and concepts.  The second was “Dream in a Contemporary Secret Garden”. This was an exhibit of 12 contemporary Asian artists, using mixed media to interpret the concept of “garden” in their own way.

There was a lovely pianist on the third floor playing for guests of the exhibits, and a DJ in the reception room.  Top restaurants from the Chelsea neighborhood provided the nibbles.  Crema, an upscale modern Mexican restaurant served up a truffled chicken tortila goat cheese tart as well as coconut scallop ceviche.  Late night favorite, Cafeteria, served up delicious red velvet cupcakes.  Elegant Matsuri, could barely keep their spicy shrimp siu mai on the banana leaf for a few seconds before being ravaged by hungry guests.

Sake2Me, a new company, served up fruit and tea infused sake beverages that were light and flavorful withough knocking you on your butt.  My new favorite liquor brand, Domaine de Canton, a ginger-infused cognac, also spread some cocktail love with their drink of the evening, using lemon and bitters.

My friend, photographer Joe Pobereskin has a blog, Eat At Joe’s.

I cant think of a person the blog platform would be more perfect for… I have known Joe for a number of years and have always known him to be very active in photography-related online discussion groups and the photography community in general. (Joe is currently president of ASMP NJ if that tells you anything!

Joe Pobereskin loves to write and has aspirations for doing so professionally- he has said as much to me in conversation. If you read Eat at Joe’s, Joe’s prose is succinct and clear and yet allows his gregarious personality to shine through.

Good work, Joe - keep it up!

*Also* Joe tells me he just bought himself a Leica D-Lux3 :-)

  • Motion Picture and Television Photo Archive | About:

    “Problem:
The Hollywood photograph is part of our cultural history, documenting as it does, the development and growth of a uniquely American industry. Some are significant works of art in their own right. Thoughtless of the future, some film studios and periodicals, even Photographers themselves, discarded old negatives and prints, or stored them haphazardly. We have already lost too many through deterioration and disposal. If these fragile and irreplaceable images are allowed to disappear, they can never be recaptured.

    Solution:
Fortunately, we have come to realize that these fast disappearing works substantially shaped and influenced the lives of most twentieth century Americans, and will provide an invaluable visual resource for present and future generations. However, as in the case of other endangered species, it is crucial to act now.

The aim of MPTV is to provide a permanent photography center with a special emphasis on the Hollywood photograph and the creative achievements of the Photographers.”

    TheUncoolhunter Manifesto

“Someone asked Dali: “What is fashionable?” and he answered, “what is out of fashion”.

Taking into account this postulate, a group of observers intend to glimpse a vanguard in the anti-global no trends.

Our goal is to observe everyday life and point out the uncool circuits, the anti-hegemonic culture.

From an objective and sharp look of the no trends, we want to make this “off culture” known because it is left aside by what it seems emergent.”

I was intrigued by the above manifesto, the TheUncoolhunter website and the work of its correspondents worldwide, so I sent off a request to join the network as a correspondent myself.

To my surprise and delight, I received an email this morning from TheUncoolhunter Editor and Founder, Javier Lourenco (Buenos Aires, AR):

    “Hi Richard,

Nice to meet you! How are you? Thank you for contacting us. Of course you are invited to join our uncool family.”

Javier went on to add that I could contribute “without any deadline, just for fun”, which is GOOD - after I emailed them I started having reservations and preparing my “thanks, yeah do this all the time, its a bad habit of biting off more than I chew… ” script response.

Anyway, this could be fun and I am looking forward to it.

Stay tuned, I’ll excerpt any contributions I make here and tag the posts, “TheUncoolhunter

In order to stand out from the other, let’s say, conventional websites of coolhunting and trendscouting, The Uncoolhunter wants to go further and show the other face of the trend: the no trend and worship the uncool (the trash, the bizarre, the kitsch, the cheap pretentious, the expensive sold to a lower price, the freak, the badly designed, the surreal, the hyper-real, the incoherent, the under professional, the under scientific and the underdeveloped).

    NY Times T Magazine

As might be expected, but apart from its arguably “dour” nickname, the “Grey Lady“, the New York Times is at the forefront of fashion, style and the arts with its TMagazine, online sister publication to its hardcopy T The New York Times Style Magazine

    About TMagazine:

“The ultimate destination for all things related to style. The new site combines the visually rich, dynamic content of the award-winning magazine with interactive multimedia: videos, infographics and “The Moment” blog, featuring lively updates throughout the day by T editors, guest bloggers and correspondents from around the world.”

The fact that the New York Times would pay (and traditionally has paid) as much attention to fashion and style as it has says as much for its legacy as a news journal as it does for its attempting to be a barometer of “fashionable” or “en vogue” - New York City is, of course, well known for setting trends and being an arts / fashion launching pad … - the fashion and arts industries are HUGE factors in New York City’s economy so NY fashion and style / arts trends are of keen interest to many people for a diverse variety of reasons, both locally and worldwide and for business reasons as well as people just wanting to (and / or wanting to see other people ;-) …look good and enjoy the “finer” things in life…

What caught my eye was the recent publication of a series of online short films, TTakes, shot on location recently at this year’s Sundance Film Festival - what’s ironic and interesting is (so far… at this writing only two of the 19 segments have been released…) the films are not so much journalistic coverage of the festival, (which the Times provided as well…) but rather that these short films are more like mini dramas, little films just shot on location in Utah, in many ways seemingly unrelated to the actual film festival.

    TTakes:

“In our new episodic film series, Hollywood’s bright young things improvise for the camera.

Shot by the emerging New York writer and director Brody Baker during the recent Sundance festival, these 12 short films were conceived to be viewed sequentially and feature the likes of Josh Hartnett, Michael Pitt and Lukas Haas. A new installment of ‘Take’ will be posted each weekday at 10:00 a.m. Tune in on March 17 for the first episode, starring Hartnett.”

Umm, they dont mention her but I kinda liked the little vignette that featured gorgeous Morena Baccarin myself… ;-)

In Defence of “Normal” Working Hours

Couple of interesting treatises from Digital Content Producer on the subject of long workdays typical in the production industry:

  • Digital Content Producer | Eight Hours for Hollywood | Sep 1, 1998 12:00 PM | Marsha Scarbrough

“After veteran line producer Robert Schneider budgeted a $40 million below-the-line studio feature film based on the usual 12-hour shooting day, he decided to try an experiment. He re-budgeted the same film based on an eight-hour day. He was challenging the long-held assumption that movie crews must work a 12-hour minimum day to counter the high daily costs of stage, location, and equipment rentals.

He extended the 17-week shooting schedule to 20 weeks and refigured the budget based on an eight-hour camera day with one-hour prep time and one-hour wrap time.

The new budget came in one million dollars cheaper.”

  • Extreme Hours - Film Professionals on Hollywood’s Dark Side | Nov 1, 2006 12:02 AM | By Marsha Scarbrough

“Most film production professionals have stories about working extreme hours. I personally tell tales of a rainy all-nighter in Texas where the crew went into 13 meal penalties. That night, the gaffer ordered two electricians to link arms with me to hold me up because I was falling asleep on my feet between calling out “Rolling” and “Cut.” To this day, I bless Reggie Boatright for saving me the embarrassment of falling face-first into a sea of mud while Burt Reynolds was emoting. Fortunately, I was on a distant location, so a Teamster-driven van took me back to the hotel in the morning. I was lucky I didn’t have to face the danger of driving home.”

    Sharper Image : RIP?

Washington Post | The Future Was Then | The Times Have Caught Up With That Erstwhile Icon of Modernity, the Sharper Image | By David Segal | Washington Post Staff Writer | Wednesday, February 27, 2008; Page C01

“For all of its flaws as a business, nobody can accuse the Sharper Image of over-promising. Then the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and announced it would close 90 of its roughly 180 stores “as soon as possible.” …What are we losing? A world of luminescent safety leashes, hideaway gyms, telescoping ladders –”

A trip to any upscale mall for me always warranted a stop at Sharper Image.

As intriguing as the store visit always proved, truthfully, as a location scout (or otherwise production professional) I never actually bought much, as amusing as vibrating armchairs and inflatable travel pillows could be… I am sure they must sell GPS’s, compasses, walkies and number of electronic gadgets types like me tend to become obsessed with… the feeling is always, “that’s kewl, but I’ll bet I can it cheaper at another store or buy it online?” - Maybe I am just a bit too practical (?) - paying for the privilege to shop in a “posh” mall as opposed to finding a lower price in a perhaps more utilitarian atmosphere was never an overriding priority for me - maybe much of the buying public in general has grown so as well and maybe this is at least part of Sharper Image’s problem (?)

As many other “mall magnets” are discovering, there seems to be a trend of potential buyers making the trip to the mall to look - then buying online (Sharper Image does in fact have a web storefront presence) …so then the question would be, “is the expense of maintaining stores in high rent upscale malls worth the sales volume generated by in-store sales and internet sales?” …evidently not - or maybe the Sharper Image corporate pockets are not sufficiently deep to weather a transition?

Sharper Image’s current solution appears to be to declare bankruptcy in order (I would expect) to reorganize with an alternate business model and / or with the possibility of selling the business in mind. Sharper Image is a well established brand, so I would be very surprised to see it drop off the face of the earth altogether.

The title of the Washington Post article this post was excerpted from on Digg (and here as well) is titled “Sharper Image : The Future Was Then” - and this rings true for me - when I think of Sharper Image it just seems a little tired and very “80’s”.
