    An offbeat look at a new release – Planet Earth: A Hollywood location scout explores this breathtaking BBC hit documentary

    “The series, which took five years to complete, ranges all over the world, including the Arctic. The DVD box set is available in three formats: standard definition, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

    THE PLOT: No stone or species goes unexplored in the British Broadcasting Corp.’s ambitious documentary Planet Earth, which is the first DVD to crack Amazon’s top-10 list in three formats.

    Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, the 11-part series took five years to complete. The filmmakers (there were 71 camera people) circled the globe to capture nature and wildlife from each continent in stunning high-definition. Settings include deserts, caves, jungles and ice worlds.

    OUR INSIDER: Mike Fantasia is a Hollywood location manager whose work on “Memoirs of a Geisha” won him the 2005 Location Professional of the Year award. His 30-plus films include “The River Wild,” “Dante’s Peak” and “Seabiscuit.” Fantasia was the U.S. Forest Service liaison for Steven Spielberg‘s 1989 movie “Always“. Since then, he has secured locations for globe-hopping films like “Catch Me If You Can” and “Munich.” He’s now scouting the next Spielberg film.”

    My Review:

    “I also bought this book back in the ’90′s and lent it to an associate who never returned it!

    The person I loaned it to knew very little of location scouting and location management and since I never got the book back I can only assume they found it very useful…

    Perhaps this novice level of reader was the target audience; the book does give some of the basic ‘mechanics’ and duties expected of a location professional but does not go into the many intracies of diplomacy and, as an example, being able to purvey to a lay property owner in a succinct way what you are doing, what production will be doing, what is expected of them and what is in it for them.”

    …I went on to say (among other things) that I thought the book needed an update, the book was grounded in ’80′s – ’90′s vintage technology and I didn’t think the book accurately addressed current challenges and practices of a digital-age location scout.

    Location Scouting and Management Handbook is currently out of print. The copy I bought was a paperback edition (as is currently listed on Amazon…) when I bought it new it was maybe $20 – $25:

    I probably would have more careful loaning my copy out had I known it would be a collectors edition! LOL ;-)

    The 21st century location scout (me) relies heavily on digital and online resources for creating, organizing, presenting, backing up and archiving.

    I use Jungle Disk as an interface to Amazon S3 (Simple Storage System). Amazon S3 is amazingly affordable and scalable.

    Well, today S3 crashed for a couple of hours. I just use it for backups so it was not a mission critical event for me but many high tech businesses rely on the S3 service on the fly, so the outage was an unacceptable situation for them.

    Customers Shrug Off S3 Service Failure

    Just finished Barry Gremillion’s I Killed Charles Bronson’s Cat in which Barry relates some his tales as a Hollywood Location Manager, working with such directors as Oliver Stone and other big-time Hollywood movie folk.

    Those of us that work in niche industries like location scouting or location management naturally like to read about the adventures of other people that do what we do and Barry is a natural-born story teller. Location services is a business in which in order to be successful it helps, no, really pretty much requires, that you be a “people person” and Barry seems like just that.

    The book is a short read, 175 pages, and I breezed right thru it, I couldnt put it down! I could have easily read 1,075 pages of Barry’s stories.

    I found the book poking around Scott Trimble’s website, Go For Locations. Scott has an Amazon reseller account, if you wanna buy this book and let Scott make a little commission while Barry sells a book, follow this link.
