$14 Steadicam

…via Coudal Partners

$14 Steadicam “The Poorman’s Steadicam” | By Johnny Chung Lee

“Why build a cheap steadycam?

Steadycams (or camera stabilizers) are attachments used to capture smooth looking video even when the camera and camera operator are in motion. The camera operator may walk (or even jog), move through tight hallways and doorways, and even climb up and down stairs without shaking the camera. Unfortunately, professional steadycams cost around $1500. Even the cheap 3rd party ones cost $600+. Not exactly a bargain considering many of us use cameras in that price range. So, I decided to make my own version. It turns out, it only costs $14. Not too bad. And I’ll show you how to build your own right here (or you can buy a ready-to-use steadycam from me through this website [littlegreatideas.com]). Whether you are an aspiring filmmaker, a videographer, the family documentarian, or just want more utility out of your video camera, you’ll appreciate a steadycam.”

    Any Press is Good Press

Any press is good press, right? (The San Luis Obispo Tribune)
    | DUBIOUS HONORS FOR LOCAL LOHAN FLICK | Posted By Sarah Linn | Tue, Jan. 22, 2008

Any press is good press, right? | Will ‘I Know Who Killed Me,’ up for nine shameful Razzies, put a black mark on the county as a filming locale? Promoters don’t seem fazed

“A Lindsay Lohan thriller with a Central Coast connection might have a new claim to fame: 2007’s worst movie…”

“…What’s really important is the experience that the film crew has here before they move on to other projects,” said Jonni Biaggini, Executive Director of the county Visitors & Conference Bureau. “It’s not as critical (that) the film is a box office gangbuster or not.”

A lot of people (as in, perhaps a property owner or a town government) think that just because a movie might stink at the box office, it might affect their ability to secure future work hosting other shoots (and making money…)

Well, you see, it doesnt work like that - in short, supervision of a script is not the location department’s (the part of a production crew in charge of reccommending locations to the assistant director, director and executive producer) the only people with any direct responsibility regarding the script are the writer(s), the executive producer, and director, and what they are looking for in a location is its uniqueness and suitability to the task at hand - they could, for the most part, care less where a location might have been used in a production other than their own- it’s just plain a fallacy to think otherwise. Leave critiquing a film to the film critics and gossip magazine writers and the moviegoers who pay (or don’t) to see a film - the script is just not our problem, nor is the quality of same anything most of us have any control over, so stop worrying!

At the end of the day, the adage, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, was never truer - a good experience (i.e. lots of cooperation, hospitality and other experiences leave people with a good taste in their mouths…) had by the crew can go a long way toward successfully marketing a location. The best advertising is word of mouth and if people say good things about you, they and others will be back.

The article above illustrates everything I have said; it details the success of several areas in central coastal California who are experiencing continued success in attracting film production in spite of the fact that a recent winner of many Razzies was filmed in the vicinity.

WordPress Planet | Mark Jaquith: Automattic secures $29.5 million B round | Posted in Automattic, funding, new york times, old media, venture capital by Mark Jaquith on January 23rd, 2008

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, just secured a $29.5 million B round of financing. Congrats to Matt, Toni, and everyone else at Automattic. $29.5 million is a monster round, considering that Automattic has so far grown by sipping daintily on a $1.2 million first round secured in 2006. I can’t wait to see what is next. Really interesting to me is that with this round the New York Times joins their investors. One word for that: adaptation. Lately Photoserve has been publishing two columns I find interesting and informative:

  • Portfolios of The Month

  • (You can find both of the above columns on the Photoserve home page)

Of course, in addition to the portfolio features, PhotoServe, being a product of Photo District News (PDN), which is more or less the industry standard of trade publications for commercial photography, always has other news and information of interest to me as a photo producer and location scout.

Since PDN and PhotoServe are both published out of New York City, even tho the editorial “beat” is world-wide, I often find the content even more relevant to my own personal demographic.

Photo District News produces the annual Photo Plus Expo each fall, which traditionally takes place in New York City at Javits Center serving as a major photo-industry event and includes, along with Photo District News’ own annual awards party and co-sponsored industry party, many other independently-planned parties and events scheduled to take advantage of the many different photographers, vendors and other photo-industry associates normally in town during the Photo Plus Expo.

    Commercial Directors at Sundance

Shoot Online | Neil Abramson Happy “To Be At The Dance”

Shoot Online news article briefly profiles a number of directors possibly more well-known for tv commercial work, or at least known to direct commercials as well as short films or features such as might be entered in the Sundance Film Festival.

Many artists of just about any discipline lead a lifestyle of working in the commercial end of their craft - read: bringing someone else’s vision to fruition (often in the name of monetary gain) in exchange for a lucrative fee to pay for the opportunity (read: cover living expenses, other uncontributed or unreimbursed costs) to create art of their own vision…that is, unless, perhaps, the artist is somehow independently wealthy?

Directors profiled in Neil Abramson Happy “To Be At The Dance” include:

    1. Neil Abramson
    2. Johan Renck
    3. Rawson Marshall Thurber
    4. Jens Jonsson
    5. Chris Waitt
    6. Jinx Godfrey(Editor)
    7. Michel Gondry
    8. Noam Murro
    9. Mark Pellington
    10. Catherine Owens

    Sundance / TROMADANCE

It’s that time of year once again with the Sundance Film Festival coming up, beginning January 18th, but how many of you know about TromaDance!?

New York Magazine | Movies | Film Festivals | Sundance | Comments | TromaDance

    About TromaDance

“TromaDance is the first film festival wholeheartedly devoted to filmmakers and fans. Unlike every other film festival, TromaDance does not charge filmmakers to submit their films. Entrance to all screenings is free and open to the public. Also, there are no VIP reservations or preferential treatment regarding films, panels, or parties of any kind given. The organizers of TromaDance believe films are meant to be seen, especially when it comes to new filmmakers. Art - in all its forms - is for the people!”

    TromaDance | Wikipedia:

TromaDance is an independent film festival organized by Troma Films and held annually in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. It was created as an alternative to the Sundance Film Festival, because the organizers felt that Sundance had become too “Hollywood” by charging high entry fees, showing multi-million-dollar “independent” movies, and limiting attendance.

Located in both Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah, it runs concurrently with the Sundance Film Festival in an attempt to lure people away from that well known event. Troma President, Lloyd Kaufman got the idea from South Park co-creator Trey Parker while the two were discussing the elitist structure and selection process of the Sundance Film Festival and its involvement with celebrities such as Robert Redford. Parker encouraged Kaufman to create his own festival and thus resulted TromaDance. TromaDance requires no entry fee for filmmakers and does not charge people to see their films. All money comes from donations.”

    Paper Art

Peter Callesen | Selected Works | … by way of Little Wing

    Quote from artist’s website:

“Most recently I have started making white paper cuts/sculptures inspired by fairytales and romanticism exploring the relationship between two and three dimensionality, between image and reality. I find the materialization of a flat piece of paper into a 3D form as an almost magic process - or maybe one could call it obvious magic, because the process is obvious and the figures still stick to their origin, without the possibility of escaping. In that sense there is also an aspect of something tragic in most of the cuts.”

    Image Warehouse

I received a publicity release late Friday afternoon from the national office of ASMP announcing a new start-up, Image Warehouse, operated by ASMP member, Carroll Seghers.

Image Warehouse is an internet-based stock photography agency with a focus toward book and fine-art-print markets.

I am always on the lookout for new and innovative businesses and vehicles to market same; Image Warehouse brings to the table very attractive commission-splits as well as a strong online presence and offers discounted rates on fees for peripheral services for its photo contributors. More info about Image Warehouse may be found here.

I didnt realize at the time I received ASMP’s announcement that Image Warehouse’s owner, Carroll Seghers, was based in the Princeton, NJ area, so I was quite thrilled at the unexpected opportunity meet Carroll in person Saturday evening at ASMP New Jersey’s Annual Holiday Party as well as being impressed by his Leica D-Lux3 camera (I also own a D-Lux3)

Best wishes for good luck with your new venture, Carroll!

    Wikipedia-n-Me

I recently authored my second article for Wikipedia, a short definition / description of the term “location library”:

Location Library (Motion Pictures and Still Photography)

…the title is nearly as long as the article! ;-) Believe it or not, even tho the terms “location archive” or actually, more frequently, “location library” are terms I (and maybe you, too, if you are reading this - it’s not like I ever purported my blog to even attempt to appeal to anyone beyond a very specific niche of folks who work in various capacities in the film, photo and tv production communities… so unless you fit that profile the only way I can imagine you ended up here is you are really lost or really bored ;-) )

    …but I digress…

I started a considerably lengthier article on the subject of location scouting several years ago:

    Location Scouting

..which I have continued to contribute to regularly as the article has matured - thanks of course to the generous contributions other Wikipedians

Both articles are part of my efforts as a member of Film-Reel-Wikipedia Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Filmmaking task force

Also, altho the Wikipedia no-follow links policy is in place for very good reasons (i.e. link spam) and therefore, since Wikipedia doesnt generate any “link love“, I am tooting my horn here!

    Chatterbox

Louisa Curtis, aka Chatterbox, just redid her website (which looks great, by the way!) including the recent addition of the ChatterBlog.

Louisa is a well-known face around the New York City commercial and editorial photography industries and if you know Louisa at all, you will understand what all the “Chatter-this” and “Chatter-that” is all about ;-) It’s true, Louisa is a person who loves to talk, however, unlike many people I have encountered over the years who talk incessantly (and I am pretty sensitive to this), Louisa generally actually has something to say and I have always found Louisa to only have good things to say about others as well as exhibiting an unusually positive attitude about business and life, not to mention, due to her gregarious nature and many years of experience in the photography business, Louisa “knows everybody” and is a bottomless well of photo business knowledge and advice.

Best wishes for continued success in 2008, Louisa!
